Areas for Curriculum Development
Listed in each area are some of the concepts we will feel are important to address as we plan activities for young children in our program.
Art… a variety of materials, color identification and discrimination, variety of textures, creativity, fine motor skills, experimentation, social interaction, sequencing and sorting, care and use of materials, art appreciation, aesthetic awareness, listening and following directions in order, vocabulary
Cooking… senses, opportunities for social interaction, vocabulary, nutrition/healthy foods, listening & following directions, measuring, predicting outcomes, experimentation, appreciation, fine motor skills, textures
Language… name recognition, vocabulary, connection between written/spoken word, opportunities for verbal expression in different settings, letter recognition, rhyming, opposites, following directions, sequencing, listening & following directions, predicting story ending, completing story starter, dramatic play, role playing, puppetry, acting out stories, dress up
Math… number recognition and identification: ordinal and cardinal, 1 to 1 correspondence, counting real objects, comparisons: size, shape, weight, position, time, spatial concepts/relationships/positions, opposites, sequencing, sorting, classifying, patterning, matching, ordering, vocabulary, listening & following direction
Music… singing, rhythm, tempo, pitch, instruments, vocabulary, listening & following directions, appreciation for various kinds
Physical… hopping, skipping, galloping, tiptoeing, running, jumping, climbing, balancing, bike riding, ball handling, swinging, eye-hand and eye-foot co-ordination, large motor skills, agility, flexibility, self confidence, safety: personal & others, appropriate risk-taking, vocabulary, listening & following directions
Science… observing, questioning, investigating, predicting outcomes, experiments, body awareness, personal hygiene and safety,, vocabulary, listening & following directions
Social… appropriate manners, acceptable behaviors and language, settling conflicts verbally, respect for others and self, verbalizing needs & feelings appropriately, sense of responsibility for personal and community property, sense of belonging and trust for the environment and adults within that environment, predicting outcomes to actions, sharing, taking turns, listening to others, positive self image and self esteem
Social Studies… families, homes, community helpers, different communities, other cultures and customs, relationships: personal, family, community, school, church, likenesses and differences, tolerance, pride, our country, Lincoln, George Washington
Spiritual...I am a child of God, Jesus loves me, I am special and worthy of being loved, I talk to God by praying, I have gifts and talents God has given just to me, showing Jesus’ love to others, Bible is God’s book, God as creator, Bible friends: Jesus, God, Mary, Joseph, Noah, Christmas is Jesus’ Birthday
